About WWU Men’s Rowing
Who We Are
Western Washington University Men’s Rowing is a community of dedicated student athletes. Our team pursues excellence on the water, in the weight room, and in the classroom. We train six days a week and compete around the country at the highest levels of collegiate club rowing. We are entirely self-funded through donations and our own rent-a-rower program.
Where We Row
Situated just fifteen minutes from campus, the Jack Marolich shellhouse sits on beautiful Lake Whatcom as part of the Lakewood Facility. Surrounded by mountains and forests, Lake Whatcom provides over thirteen kilometers of year-round, uninterrupted rowing.
WWU CREW HISTORY
Established in 1969 through a grant by Red Haskell, WWU Men’s Rowing has been a staple of the Pacific Northwest rowing scene for over 50 years. The team’s early years were marked with extraordinary success, including a top five finish at the IRA Championship Regatta.
The Viking Crew were the first men’s rowing team in the country to compete in a major competition with a female coxswain, paving the way for generations of rowers. The Viking Crew also hosted one of the premiere West Coast regattas in the Samish Sprints held every spring.
The team transitioned into a club sport in 2000 and continues the legacy built by previous generations of rowers. Today, the Viking Crew rows out of the Jack Marolich shell house on beautiful Lake Whatcom. The team boasts over thirty dedicated rowers and coxswains, and travels to regattas around the country.
